Here we go again.......

Enjoyed doing my first Hampshire Year List in 2017 seeing 190, I am trying for 200 in 2018.
Started the year off on the Tuesday 2nd January down at Warblington, seeing: CORMORANT, CATTLE EGRET, LITTLE EGRET, MUTE SWAN, DARK-BELLIED BRENT GOOSE, WIGEON, BUZZARD, PHEASANT, MOORHEN, OYSTERCATCHER, CURLEW, GREEN SANDPIPER, BLACK-HEADED GULL, HERRING GULL, WOODPIGEON, COLLARED DOVE, PIED WAGTAIL, WREN, ROBIN, BLACKBIRD, REDWING, MISTLE THRUSH, MAGPIE, JACKDAW, ROOK, CARRION CROW, STARLING, HOUSE SPARROW & CHAFFINCH.

TOTAL FOR YEAR = 29 (Hampshire year list = 29)

Then along the M27 to Testwood Lakes, no Great white egrets but I did see: Cormorant, Mute swan, CANADA GOOSE, Wigeon, GADWALL, TEAL, MALLARD, SHOVELER, POCHARD, TUFTED DUCK, COOT. LAPWING. Black-headed gull, Herring gull, Woodpigeon, Wren, Robin, STONECHAT, Blackbird, SONG THRUSH, Redwing, CHIFFCHAFF, GOLDCREST, BLUE TIT & GREAT TIT.

I then made the decision to go back along the M27, and then down to Sandy Point on Hayling Island, where I enjoyed the afternoon seeing: BLACK-THROATED DIVER, GREAT NORTHERN DIVER, LITTLE GREBE, GREAT CRESTED GREBE, SLAVONIAN GREBE, Cormorant, Little egret, Dark-bellied brent goose, SHELDUCK, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, Oystercatcher, RINGED PLOVER, GREY PLOVER, SANDERLING, DUNLIN, BAR-TAILED GODWIT, Curlew, REDSHANK, TURNSTONE, Black-headed gull, Herring gull, GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, SANDWICH TERN, GUILLEMOT, Woodpigeon, Robin, Blackbird, Carrion crow & Starling.

On Wednesday 3rd I drove down to Keyhaven & Pennington marshes and noted 44 species of bird.

Little grebe, Great crested grebe, RED-NECKED GREBE, Slavonian grebe, Cormorant, Little egret, Mute swan, Canada goose, Dark-bellied brent goose, Shelduck, Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, PINTAIL, Shoveler, EIDER, Red-breasted merganser, SPARROWHAWK, Oystercatcher, GOLDEN PLOVER, Lapwing, Dunlin, Curlew, SPOTTED REDSHANK, Redshank, GREENSHANK, Turnstone, Black-headed gull, Herring gull, Great black-backed gull, Woodigeon, Collared dove, GREEN WOODPECKER, SKYLARK, MEADOW PIPIT, ROCK PIPIT, Pied wagtail, DUNNOCK, Blackbird, Mistle thrush, LONG-TAILED TIT, Magpie, Carrion crow & Starling.

Friday 5th and as I was working down at Bournemouth, I spent my lunchtime in Tern hide over looking Ibsley water, seeing: Little grebe, BLACK-NECKED GREBE, Cormorant, Mute swan, GREYLAG GOOSE, Canada goose, Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, Pintail, Shoveler, Pochard, Tufted duck, GOLDENEYE, GOOSANDER, Coot, MEDITERRANEAN GULL, Black-headed gull, RING-BILLED GULL, COMMON GULL, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, Herring gull, Great black-backed gull, Woodigeon,GREY WAGTAIL, Pied wagtail, Blackbird, Magpie & LINNET


TOTAL FOR YEAR = 84 (Hampshire year list = 84)

Sunday 7th and I had a walk around the area surrounding Firgrove manor, Eversley, seeing: Mallard, RED KITE, KESTREL, Black-headed gull, Woodpigeon. TAWNY OWL, GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER, Grey wagtail, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, FIELDFARE, Redwing, Mistle thrush, Goldcrest, Long-tailed tit, Blue tit, Great tit, NUTHATCH, JAY, Magpie, Jackdaw, Rook, Carrion crow, Starling, GOLDFINCH & BULLFINCH.

Wednesday 10th, after I had completed my work for the day I drove straight down to Southsea castle, where I watched a SHAG diving just offshore, and three PURPLE SANDPIPER's feeding amongst the rocks below the castle, also seen: Black-headed gull, Common gull, Herring gull, FERAL PIGEON, Woodpigeon, Rock pipit, Carrion crow & Starling.

Then the short drive to Fort Cumberland, Eastney where I watched a fine male BLACK REDSTART.

Then I spent the rest of the afternoon walking around Farlington marshes, seeing: Little grebe, Great crested grebe, Little egret, GREY HERON, Canada goose, BARNACLE GOOSE, Dark-bellied brent goose, Shelduck, Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, Pintail, Red-breasted merganser, MARSH HARRIERKestrel, Pheasant, Moorhen, Coot, AVOCET, Oystercatcher, Ringed plover, Grey plover, Lapwing, Dunlin, Curlew, Redshank, Greenshank, Black-headed gull, Common gull, Woodpigeon, Robin, Stonechat, Blackbird, Song thrush, BEARDED TITMagpie, Carrion crow & REED BUNTING.

Wednesday 17th, and another day looking to add to my Hampshire year list, started at Chawton for the HAWFINCHES, also added COAL TIT & GREENFINCH.

Then to Osbourne farm, Sleaford, didn't see any partridges, but did see and watch a PEREGRINE as it sat on the ground looking and around and preening.

Finally I spent the afternoon, at Bransbury common, no harriers or owls but did add RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGE.

Monday 22nd and as I was on call, I drove down the A3 to Hayling island and then to Sandy point, where I quickly noted the following: Great northern diver, Great crested grebe, Dark-bellied brent goose, Oystercatcher, Black-headed gull, Guillemot, RAZORBILL, Woodpigeon, Robin, Song thrush, Magpie, Carrion crow, Chaffinch & Greenfinch.

Then to Eyeworth pond, Fritham for MANDARIN & MARSH TIT.

A quick look in the fields at Harbridge added, EGYPTIAN GOOSE.

I spent the rest of the day at Blashford lakes (Woodland hide, Ivy lake and Ibsley water) seeing 40 species of bird.

Little grebe, Great crested grebe, Cormornat, Mute swan, PINK-FOOTED GOOSE, Greylag goose, Canada goose, Wigeon, Gadwall, Teal, Mallard, Pintail, Shoveler, Pochard, Tufted duck, Goldeneye, Goosander, Coot, Lapwing, Black-headed gull, Common gull, Lesser black-backed gull, Herring gull, Great black-backed gull, Great spotted woodpecker, Wren, Robin, Blackbird, Song thrush, Long-tailed tit, Blue tit, Great tit, Nuthatch, Jackdaw, Chaffinch, BRAMBLING, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, SISKIN & Reed bunting.

Monday 29th and like last Monday I was on call, and I made my way to Staines reservoirs Surrey, as the American Horned Lark had returned. I had tried for this bird back in November, and all I got was frozen as I dipped. I made my way along the causeway to some other birders who  put me straight onto the AMERICAN HORNED LARK, I watched as it fed along the bank, giving great close views. A new bird for me, no other birds added to the year list.

I then drove down to Keyhaven & Pennington marshes arriving around 11:00, I was soon watching the ICELAND GULL as it walked around the horse field. I had a quick look over Keyhaven marshes where I added BLACK-TAILED GODWIT, back in the car and I drove down Lower pennington lane, parked up at Iley lane. I walked along Iley lane looking at all the geese until I found the three EUROPEAN WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. I walked along the sea wall back to my car, and while there heard a STOCK DOVE, soon found him and he then embarked on a display flight, a nice end to the day.

Wednesday 7th February and as I had no calls for work today, I spent the day in the field visiting various sites in Hampshire. I started down at Titchfield and had a short walk down the canal path to view the spilt tree with the two roosting BARN OWL's.

Then onto Hoglands park Southampton, where I parked up next to Debenhams, and it took a full circuit of the park before I picked up the RING-NECKED PARAKEET in the large plane tree next to Debenhams.

A short drive to Riverside park southampton, No common sandpipers but did see 6 BLACK SWAN's

Seeing reports of a Bewick's swan I drove to Harbridge, and in a field with the Mute swans & Egyptian geese was the BEWICK’S SWAN.

Then to finish the day off I went to Tern hide at Ibsley water for some gull watching, turned out well with 9 different types of gull seen, Mediterranean gull, Black-headed gull, Common gull, Herring gull, CASPIAN GULL, YELLOW-LEGGED GULL, THAYER’S GULL, Lesser black-backed gull & Great black-backed gull. The Thayer's gull being a new bird for me.

Tuesday 13th and I made the short drive to Crookham Village to watch the LESSER REDPOLL's that were visiting a garden where feeders were put out.

Still raining but I went to Pinglestone watercress beds where I saw: Mallard, Pheasant, Moorhen, Green sandpiper, Black-headed gull, Woodpigeon, Meadow pipit, WATER PIPIT, Grey wagtail, Pied wagtail, Blackbird, Long-tailed tit & Rook.

Friday 16th and as I was on call for work. I made the short trip down the M3 to Walker's copse, Dummer, No Willow tits found, but I did see: Red kite, Buzzard, Red-legged partridge, Pheasant, Woodpigeon, Collared dove, Great spotted woodpecker, Skylark, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Song thrush, Mistle thrush, Goldcrest, Long-tailed tit, Coal tit, Blue tit, Great tit, Nuthatch, TREECREEPER, Jay, Magpie, Carrion crow, House sparrow, Chaffinch, Linnet & YELLOWHAMMER.



TOTAL FOR YEAR = 131 (Hampshire year list = 128)

Tuesday 20th again no calls, so I spent the day down at Farlington marshes, seeing 45 species including MERLIN, WATER RAIL SNIPE for the year list.

Wednesday 21st and I went to Preston oak hills to look for Willow tits, again none seen, but did flush a WOODCOCK.

I then went to Overton, where I parked up down Court drove, and then went for a walk around seeing: Red kite, Buzzard, Red-legged partridge, GREY PARTRIDGE, Pheasant, Lapwing, Woodpigeon, Skylark, Pied wagtail, Wren, Robin, Blackbird, Fieldfare, Mistle thrush, Blue tit, Carrion crow, RAVEN, House sparrow, Chaffinch, Linnet & YELLOWHAMMER.
