July to December 2018

No birding notes taken in July, only birding done was while in France, when I went to Le Mans Classic. The highlights of the 44 species seen being:Quail, Turtle dove,  Black redstart, Medodious warbler & Golden Oriole.

Thrusday 2nd August, I was working in Reigate Surrey, so at lunchtime I had a walk around Buckland Sand Pits, seeing 19 species of bird, highlight being the Sand martins.

Friday 3rd August, I was working in Kings Hill Kent, so at lunchtime I had a walk around Holborough marshes adding WHOOPER SWAN, to the year list, 23 species seen.

Monday 6th August, had on call day, so I drove down to Titchfield Haven, where I logged 41 species, and had great views of a WOOD SANDPIPER.

Then on to Fishlake meadows for the GREAT WHITE EGRET OSPREY, 21 species recorded while here.

Friday 10th August, another on call day, so I went down to Farlington Marshes, adding WHIMBREL, 33 species seen.

Friday 17th August, as I was working near Staines Reservoirs, I spent my lunchtime up there, seeing: Great crested grebe, Black-necked grebe, Cormorant, Grey heron, Canada goose, Gadwall, Mallard, Tufted duck, coot, Ringed plover, Black-headed gull, Herring gull, Common tern, Woodpigeon, Swift, Sand martin, Swallow, House martin, Pied wagtail, Carrion crow, Starling, Goldfinch & Linnet.

Friday 31st August, after I had finished my call in Docklands London, I drove to Wanstead flats to see the RED-BACKED SHRIKE.

I then dropped into Staines reservoirs, for the RED-NECKED PHALAROPE BLACK TERN.

Thrusday 6th September, an on call day, so went down to Farlington marshes adding WHINCHAT, 30 species seen.

Then onto Titchfield haven to see the TEMMINCK’S STINT, 26 species seen while here.

Friday 21st September, on call again, so back to Farlington marshes, where I saw the following: Little grebe, Little egret, Mute swan, Canada goose, Shelduck, Teal, Mallard, Pintail, Tufted duck, Kestrel, Moorhen, Coot, Lapwing, Black-tailed godwit, Spotted redshank, Redshank, Black-headed gull, Common gull, Herring gull, Great black-backed gull, Woodpigeon, Sand martin, Swallow, YELLOW WAGTAIL, Robin, Cetti's warbler, Red-backed shrike, Magpie, Carrion crow, Starling & Goldfinch.

While on holiday from work, news broke of a PECTORAL SANDPIPER, at The Vyne water meadows near Basingstoke.

Thursday 4th October, as I was working down in Bournemouth, I dropped into Ibsley water, Blashford lakes, to see the FERRUGINOUS DUCK.

Friday 5th October, I had booked off as holiday, started the day down at Farlington marshes, seeing 46 species. Then onto Fishlake meadows where I saw 35 species.

Monday 15th October, on call for work, so drove to Leaded hall, New forest to see the Ring Ouzel.

Tuesday 23rd October, drove down to Keyhaven & Pennington marshes as on call for work, 56 species seen, added LONG-TAILED DUCK.

Tuesday 6th November, after completing my work near Heathrow, I drove down to Heath pond, Petersfield to see the drake RED-CRESTED POCHARD.

Wednesday 14th November, as I was working in kings Hill, I had a lunch time walk around Manor Park West Malling seeing the following: Little grebe, Gadwall, Mallard, Tufted duck, Pheasant, Moorhen, Coot, Black-headed gull, Stock dove, Woodpigeon. Green woodpecker, Great spotted woodpecker, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Mistle thrush, Long-tailed tit, Blue tit, Great tit, Jay, Magpie, Jackdaw, Carrion crow, Starling, Chaffinch & Goldfinch.

Monday 26th November, I had booked this day off as holiday, so I went down to Pennington & Normandy marshes. As a TWITE, had been reported, it took a while going through the linnet flock on Normandy marsh, to see the Twite, but its pink rump and yellow bill showed well in the winter sun, 44 species seen.

TOTAL FOR YEAR = 197 (Hampshire year list = 188)

Then a quick visit the Titchfield haven for the SNOW BUNTING on the beach, Common scoter and VELVET SCOTER,both on the sea.

Thursday 29th November I was on call, so went down to Testwood lakes, no Bittern but did see 34 species, which included great views of Great white egret & Kingfisher.

Friday 30th November, again on call, so went down to Farlington marshes, a quiet day bird wise with only 38 species seen, and no new birds added to year or Hampshire lists.

Thrusday 6th December, again working near Heathrow, and reports of European White-fronted geese being in Dorney. So at lunchtime I drove there and recorded in the same field:European White-fronted goose (3), Greylay goose (4), Canade goose (292), & Egyptian goose (48)


TOTAL FOR YEAR = 199

Monday 10th December, Holiday booked, So I went down to Blashford lakes, and went to the Ivy Lake hide and finally saw my 200th bird species of the year, BITTERN. Then onto Farlington marshes, 38 species seen here, but no new additions to the year lists.

Thrusday 13th December, back at work near Heathrow, and another lunch time at Dorney, this time to the rowing lake, did not find the Scaup, so ended the year on 200.
