March 2017 - Bluethroat in Lincolnshire, and still not found any Willow tits in Hampshire

Wednesday 1st March, no calls today, so I went after a lifer. I drove up to Lincolnshire and when passing The Delph, I stopped to look at the herd of swans, and saw Mute swan, WHOOPER SWAN, Mallard, Tufted duck & Skylark.

Then to Lincolnshire wildlife trusts, Willow tree fen where I joined other birders for the long staying Bluethroat, watched him for a while and took some photos, and as my first time here I had a walk around. Seeing:Little egret, Grey heron, Mute swan, Shelduck, Wigeon, Gadwall, Teal, Pintail, Shoveler, Goosander, Marsh harrier, Red-legged partridge, Moorhen, Coot, Lapwing, Collared dove, Skylark, Wren, Robin, BLUETHROAT, Fieldfare, CETTI’S WARBLER, Blue tit, Jackdaw, Rook, Starling, & Goldfinch



TOTAL FOR YEAR = 132

Then on to Deeping lakes, to view the island in the main lake from the hide, for the roosting Long-eared owls, also noted: Little grebe, Cormorant, Mute swan, Greylag goose, Egyptian goose, Shelduck, Wigeon, Gadwall, Teal, Mallard, Pintail, Shoveler, Tufted duck, Goldeneye, Kestrel, Moorhen, Oystercatcher, Lapwing, Black-headed gull, Lesser black-backed gull, Herring gull, Woodpigeon, LONG-EARED OWL, Green woodpecker, Robin, Jackdaw & Carrion crow.

I finished the day at RSPB reserve Nene washes Eldernell, where there was 22 Cranes and 100's of Golden plover, which put on a great show when flushed by  a passing marsh harrier. Seen: Cormorant, Grey heron, Mute swan, Greylag goose, Canada goose, Shelduck, Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, Shoveler, Marsh harrier, Buzzard, Pheasant, CRANE (22), Golden plover, Lapwing, Stock dove, Woodpigeon, Robin, Great tit, Magpie, Starling, House sparrow, Chaffinch & Goldfinch.

Thursday 2nd and another day on call, so went to Walker's copse near Dummer Hampshire hoping for willow tit, none found, but enjoyed the following:Red kite, Buzzard, Pheasant, Stock dove, Woodpigeon, Great spotted woodpecker, Skylark, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Fieldfare, Mistle thrush, Goldcrest, Long-tailed tit, Marsh tit, Coal tit, Blue tit, Great tit, Nuthatch, TREECREEPER, Carrion crow, Starling, Lesser redpoll, Goldfinch & Bullfinch.

News of a crane down at Titchfield haven, had me jump in the car and drive down, as would be a Hampshire tick. Paid my money and went down to knights bank hide, where I enjoyed good views of the crane. The crane was ringed and found to be a RELEASED bird, so is not tickable. Oh well always next time, also seen: Cormorant, Mute swan, Canada goose, BARNACLE GOOSE, Shelduck, Wigeon, Gadwall, Teal, Shoveler, Pochard, Marsh harrier, Buzzard, Moorhen, Coot, Crane, Oystercatcher, Avocet, Lapwing, Turnstone, Black-headed gull, Lesser black-backed gull, Great black-backed gull, Woodpigeon, Grey wagtail, Dunnock, Robin, Long-tailed tit, Jackdaw, Carrion crow, Starling, House sparrow & Greenfinch.

Friday 3rd and still quiet at work so I went to Pinglestone watercress beds to see: Cormorant, Cattle egret, Little egret, Canada goose, Mallard, Tufted duck, Buzzard, Kestrel, Pheasant, Moorhen, GREEN SANDPIPER, Black-headed gull, Woodpigeon, Collared dove, Green woodpecker, WATER PIPIT, Grey wagtail, Pied wagtail, Wren, Dunnock, Stonechat, Blackbird, Song thrush, Mistle thrush, Long-tailed tit, Blue tit, Great tit, Magpie, Carrion crow, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch & Bullfinch.







TOTAL FOR YEAR = 138 (Hampshire year list = 126)

Finished the day at Old Alresford pond, and while waiting for the two Hen harriers to come into roost saw the following: Cormorant, Little egret, Grey heron, Mute swan, Canada goose, Shelduck, Gadwall, Teal, Mallard, Shoveler, Pochard, Tufted duck, HEN HARRIER, Buzzard, Coot, Lapwing, Black-headed gull, Woodpigeon, Barn owl, Great spotted woodpecker, Wren, Robin, Blackbird, Magpie, Jackdaw & Carrion crow.

After finishing work on Tuesday 7th in Romford, I made the short drive to Borehamwood, were I saw: Woodpigeon, MONK PARAKEET, Robin, Blackbird, Magpie & Carrion crow.

Friday 10th and another day birding in Hampshire, started at Mark Ash Wood, New forest, for: Stock dove, Woodpigeon, LESSER SPOTTED WOODPECKER, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, 
Song thrush, Mistle thrush, Goldcrest, FIRECREST, Coal tit, Blue tit, Great tit, Jay & Chaffinch.

TOTAL FOR YEAR = 142 (Hampshire year list = 129)

Then a quick visit to a foggy Pennington marshes for: Mute swan, Canada goose, Shelduck, Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, Shoveler, Lapwing, RUFF, Black-tailed godwit, Black-headed gull, Woodpigeon, Skylark, Robin, Magpie, Carrion crow, Starling & Chaffinch.

Wednesday 15th spent the day looking for willow tit, failed again, tried at Walker's copse Dummer, and Preston oak hills and High wood both near Ellisfield. Did see marsh tits again, also coming out of Preston oak hills I heard a strange call, which turned out to be some Helmeted Guineafowl feeding along the edge of a field. Also flushed a pair of mandarin from a small pond in High wood. No new birds for year or Hampshire year lists.














Monday 20th, went to Fleet pond hoping to see the garganey pair, no show, but had a walk around the pond and added: Great crested grebe, Cormorant, Grey heron, Mute swan, Greylag goose, Canada goose, Teal, Mallard, Tufted duck, WATER RAIL, Moorhen, Coot, Black-headed gull, Herring gull, Stock dove, Woodpigeon, Kingfisher, Green woodpecker, Great spotted woodpecker, Wren, Robin, Song thrush, Chiffchaff, WILLOW WARBLER, Coal tit, Blue tit, Great tit, Magpie, Carrion crow, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Siskin & Reed bunting.

In the evening while walking the dogs over Hawley common had great views as it flew low over of WOODCOCK, Robin, Blackbird & Song thrush.

Wednesday 22nd and back to Fleet pond, this time I had great views of the garganey pair, a Hampshire tick for me. Great crested grebe, Cormorant, Grey heron, Mute swan, Canada goose, Egyptian goose, Gadwall, Teal, Mallard, GARGANEY, Tufted duck, Moorhen, Coot, Black-headed gull, Woodpigeon, Grey wagtail, Robin, Blackbird, Magpie, Carrion crow, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Siskin & Reed bunting.

Then in the late afternoon took the dogs for a walk over at Blackbushe airport seeing: Woodpigeon, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Song thrush, Chiffchaff, Blue tit, Great tit, Jay, Magpie, Carrion crow, Greenfinch, Goldfinch & Linnet.

On the morning dog walk on 30th March along Cove brook, Farnborough I had my first Blackcap of the year: Mallard, Black-headed gull, Woodpigeon, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, BLACKCAP, Chiffchaff, Blue tit, Great tit, Jay, Magpie, Carrion crow & Greenfinch.

and the evening dog walk was over Yateley common (MOD) where I had great views of a singing Dartford warbler. Birds seen: Cormorant, Woodpigeon, Wren, Robin, Blackbird, Song thrush, DARTFORD WARBLER, Chiffchaff, Carrion crow, Greenfinch & Linnet.

Friday 31st, and as working in Bournemouth, I spent my lunchtime in the Tern hide over looking Ibsley water, blashford lakes, Where I noted the following: Great crested grebe, Cormorant, Mute swan, Greylag goose, Canada goose, Egyptian goose, Gadwall, Mallard, Shoveler, Tufted duck, Goosander, Buzzard, Coot, Oystercatcher, LITTLE RINGED PLOVER, Lapwing, Redshank, Black-headed gull, Herring gull, Great black-backed gull, Pied wagtail, Magpie & Jackdaw.

Stopped off at Fleet pond to have another look at the garganeys :o)
